Riverwood welcomes new family physician

Jessica Hodson, DO, sees patients at Riverwood clinics in Aitkin & Garrison

Riverwood Healthcare Center welcomes Jessica Hodson, DO, family medicine physician who will begin seeing patients in mid-August.

“We are excited to welcome Jessica to our family practice medical staff,” says Dr. Mark Heggem, Chief Medical Officer. “With her osteopathic degree and training, she brings to Riverwood an extra level of expertise in the treatment of musculoskeletal issues and a holistic approach to medicine.”

Hodson will see patients primarily in Aitkin with several days a month in Garrison. Her professional interests include obstetric care, pediatrics and osteopathic medicine, which involves manipulation of the body to help it heal itself.

“Practicing at Riverwood in a smaller community appeals to me because I can see patients across the full spectrum of family medicine, from birth to end of life,” Hodson explains. “I like that while the medical facilities here are small we can still offer cutting-edge technology to patients.”

A midwestern native, Hodson grew up in Rochester, Michigan. She attended the University of Michigan, where she earned a B.S. degree in biopsychology. She completed her medical degree—doctor of osteopathy—at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in Brandenton, Florida. She completed a one-year internship in osteopathic medicine at Duke Southern Regional Area Health Education Center in Fayetteville, North Carolina. She spent the last two years of her residency training at Cabarraus Family Medicine in Concord, North Carolina.

“I love boating and getting out on the water so living right in the heart of northwoods lake country was very attractive to me and my husband,” Hodson says.  “I look forward to getting involved in the community and one of the first things I’ll be doing is teaching Zumba, which combines Latin and international music and dancing for a fun cardio workout, through Aitkin’s community education program.”

Hodson recently moved to the Aitkin area with her husband, John, who has a master’s degree in education and recently began working as the new community education director in Aitkin. In her leisure time, she enjoys boating, cooking, running, and Zumba.

For an appointment with Dr. Hodson, call Riverwood’s appointment line at (218) 927-2157 or toll-free at (888) 270-1882.

Physician in training will join Riverwood medical staff

Tuesday, July 24th, 2012

Dr. Austin Krohn to join Riverwood Family Practice in 2014.

Dr. Austin Krohn, who trained at Riverwood Healthcare Center through the Rural Physician Associate Program from October 2008 through June 2009, returned for a week of family medicine clinical training July 16-20.

Krohn, in his third year of residency training at North Memorial Medical Center in the Twin Cities, will join the family practice medical staff at Riverwood when he completes his training in the fall of 2014. He will finish his residency in 2013 and then has plans to complete a one-year fellowship in sports medicine.

“I’ve been a sports nut all my life, playing football, baseball and basketball,” Krohn says. “So tapping this passion to treat those with sports-related injuries and other orthopaedic issues is of great interest to me. While musculoskeletal medicine certainly is a passion of mine, I have strong interests across the whole spectrum of family medicine, including obstetric care.”

He adds:  “For me, coming to a small community to practice medicine is what I’ve always wanted.  I grew up in Pierz, similar in size to Aitkin, and I’m looking forward to raising my children in a close-knit community where I’ll get to see friends and neighbors as patients. I look forward to settling down here in a few years and getting active in the community.”

Krohn and his wife Colleen have already put down roots in Aitkin. They have purchased a home near Cedar Lake and have a 2-year-old daughter, Ella, and another baby due to arrive in a few months.

Dr. Mark Heggem, Chief Medical Officer at Riverwood, comments: “In this highly competitive recruitment environment for family physicians to join smaller practices in rural communities, we are very fortunate to have Austin joining our medical staff.  His passion for family medicine, and this community, is a huge asset for our medical team and his patients.”

New RPAP medical student

Tuesday, November 1st, 2011

Cory Bushmann, RPAP medical student

Riverwood Healthcare Center is pleased to welcome Cory Buschmann, a third-year medical student at the University of Minnesota Medical School who is participating in the Rural Physician Associate Program (RPAP).

Through the RPAP program, a third-year medical student lives in a rural community for nine months and participates in rotations of hospital and clinic care of patients under the supervision of local physicians. In October, Buschmann began an 8-week rotation with Dr. Donald Hughes, Riverwood Family Practice physician who acts as the primary mentor and trainer for resident physicians and medical students at Riverwood.

In the months ahead, Buschmann will also learn about obstetrics and gynecology care with Drs. Michael and Rachel Cady, OB/GYN specialists and surgeons, and spend time observing surgical care from local surgeons. He will see patients in clinic, hospital, emergency room, nursing homes, hospice and within the community.

A native of Chanhassen, a suburb of Minneapolis, Buschmann completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Minnesota in the Twin Cities.  He enjoys traveling and studied abroad in Costa Rica for five months while an undergrad student.

“The first couple years of medical school I enjoyed participating in the Family Medicine Interest Group, volunteering at the student-run free clinic, and leading a diabetes support and education group,” Buschmann says. “What I like about the RPAP program is the intensive, one-on-one training and the opportunity to get a lot of hands-on, direct patient care experience.”

Fresh from medical school where the latest medical trends and research are shared in the classroom, Buschmann feels he can add value to rural patient care by applying this knowledge of new medical advances, such as the effectiveness of ACE inhibitors—a group of drugs used primarily to treat high blood pressure and congestive heart failure. With a special interest in adolescent health, he will be pursuing a project on adolescent sexual health and vaccines as part of his RPAP experience.

Buschmann will be living in Aitkin and working at Riverwood through the end of June.  Outside of work, he enjoys playing hockey, running and biking, and basketball.
