New WELLNESS Resources guides now available

Wednesday, June 5th, 2013

Get outside, get active this summer. With long hours of daylight, school vacations and family travel, summer offers rich opportunities for fitness and fun. Think of the warm weather and sunny days as a chance to improve your own and your family’s physical fitness.

Riverwood Healthcare has put together a new Community Wellness Resources guide that lists local resources for hiking, biking, fitness activities and more. We have also compiled a guide to Riverwood Wellness Resources. Print copies of both guides are available at Riverwood’s Aitkin, Garrison and McGregor clinics.

At the Rice Lake National Wildlife Refuge in the McGregor area, June 7 is “Wild Encounters Family Fun Day” with nature walks, nature photography, birding, fishing and more. For more information, see the Summer 2013 schedule in the Big Sandy Water Institute brochure.

On July 27,  look for the launch of the AMAZING RACE-AITKIN EDITION, which will pit teams against each other on a trek around Aitkin for one day. At every destination, each team must compete in a series of challenges, some mental and some physical, and only when the tasks are completed will they learn of their next location. Check out the hiking trails at Savanna Portage State Park north of McGregor, Kathio State Park near the south end of Mille Lacs Lake, or Cuyuna Lakes Trail in the Deerwood/Crosby area.

Enjoy other summer fitness activities in your own backyard, your neighborhood park or at the lake, including kickball, badminton, frisbee, swimming and beach volleyball. For a list of summer activities for kids, go to http://www.parenting.com/article/fun-things-to-do-summer

Riverwood receives statewide award for wellness campaign

Friday, May 31st, 2013

Team members from Riverwood and Johnson Group Marketing attended the Minnesota Hospital award ceremony on May 17.

Riverwood Healthcare Center was one of seven Minnesota hospitals honored by the Minnesota Hospital Association with an annual health care award.

The Minnesota Hospital Association Annual Health Care Awards honor the best and brightest in Minnesota health care — individuals who have offered dedicated service to hospitals and organizations that have implemented successful, innovative programs. Ten individuals and seven hospitals were honored by Minnesota Hospital Association on May 17, 2013 at the 29th annual awards banquet. For the entire list of award winners, go to http://www.mnhospitals.org/about/mha-awards

Riverwood received the Community Benefit Award for its BINGO – Win with Wellness campaign in 2012. Liz Dean and Arlene Wheaton of Riverwood’s PR & Marketing department coordinated the campaign and accepted the award at the awards banquet and ceremony  in Minneapolis.

“It was such an honor to receive statewide recognition for a fun and innovative campaign that we developed to promote communitywide wellness,” Dean said. “We got a lot of positive feedback from community members on how BINGO – Win with Wellness helped get them motivated to take small steps to healthier habits. With a three-year Healthy Communities Partnership grant from the George Family Foundation and Allina Health, Riverwood is striving to keep the momentum for wellness going in Aitkin County and the Garrison/Lake Mille Lacs area.”

The Minnesota Hospital Association included this description of the BINGO wellness campaign on its website:

With unhealthy behaviors and lifestyle choices driving up obesity, diabetes, heart disease and other chronic illnesses, wellness education is essential and not just a bonus.  In January 2012, Riverwood Healthcare Center launched a year-long wellness campaign in the three primary communities it serves called “BINGO — Win with Wellness in Aitkin, Garrison and McGregor.Tapping the fun and simplicity of the BINGO game, Riverwood developed a series of four quarterly BINGO game cards offering 24 wellness tips each that individuals could do daily, weekly or monthly. Taking a holistic approach, the wellness tips covered activities for mind, body and spirit. Partnering with the local newspaper, schools, grocery stores and other organizations, the BINGO cards were made widely available and used by community residents of all ages.

Feedback from participants indicated that the simple steps to wellness motivated people to adopt healthy habits and behaviors that will hopefully last a lifetime.

Anyone interested in using the BINGO wellness cards and tips in their business or organization may contact Liz Dean at (218) 927-5555 or ldean@riverwoodhealthcare.org

New CEO to join Riverwood in July

Wednesday, May 1st, 2013

Chad Cooper

The Riverwood Healthcare Center Governing Board of Directors has selected Chad Cooper as chief executive officer with an anticipated start date of July 8. Michael Hagen, current Riverwood CEO for the past 12 years, announced his retirement last fall.

Cooper is an experienced and accomplished health care executive with 16 years of successful and progressive experience as a chief executive officer. He has successfully led both independent and system-based health care organizations.

In 2006, Cooper joined Catholic Health Initiatives (CHI) as the president and CEO of St. Mary’s Healthcare Center in Pierre, S.D., where he was responsible for the overall leadership and operation of a 60-bed hospital, a 105-bed long-term care facility and a 58-unit independent living complex.

Currently, he is serving as the president of another CHI facility, Unity Family Healthcare, in Little Falls, Minn., where he is responsible for leading both St. Gabriel’s Hospital and the Albany Area Hospital & Medical Center, along with multiple physician practices consisting of more than 40 employed physicians and other practitioners. Within this role, he has helped lead St. Gabriel’s Hospital through the Joint Commission accreditation process, supported the recruitment of four new physicians in his first 18 months, helped to significantly improve the overall financial performance of the organization, and recently began an initiative to implement the principles of the Patient Centered Medical Home across St. Gabriel’s employed primary care practice.

“Chad has a sincere commitment and strong passion for helping the health systems he has served become the best they can be,” says Mike Paulbeck, Riverwood Healthcare Governing Board of Directors. “His health care management expertise is an excellent match for the skills needed to guide Riverwood successfully into the future.”

A native of Alexandria, Minn., Cooper began his career in health care management as chief operating officer at Grant County Health Center in Elbow Lake, Minn., in 1995 and went on to serve as chief executive officer for hospitals in Sleepy Eye, 1996 to 1999, and Blue Earth, 1999-2006.

“Leading a rural health care organization is really where my roots are and where my passion lies,” Cooper explains. “Our industry is in the midst of some significant and transformational changes and success in the future will not necessarily be defined by all of the same metrics as in the past. While the imperative for change will bring with it both challenges and opportunities alike, I look forward to embracing that change head on alongside the many topnotch leaders, clinicians and other health care professionals at Riverwood.”

Cooper received a business degree in hospital administration from Concordia College in Moorhead and completed his master’s degree in health care administration from the University of Minnesota in 2008.

“Riverwood’s selection of Chad Cooper as its next leader is excellent given his outstanding qualifications and character,” says Dr. Shawn Roberts, general surgeon who practices at Riverwood who has known Cooper for 20 years since they were college roommates. “I know him and his family very well and he will be a wonderful asset for the community as well as the medical system.”

Hagen adds: “I’m very pleased with the board’s selection of Chad Cooper to take over the leadership of Riverwood. His experience managing critical access hospitals and clinics in rural communities plus his passion for supporting the delivery of high quality health care services provide a great fit for the needs of our organization and the communities we serve.”

Cooper and his wife Beth have two children, Matthew (8) and Grace (7).  They enjoy golfing and  spending time at their cabin on Lake Miltona in the Alexandria area. He also enjoys deer and pheasant hunting.

Riverwood Healthcare to launch new wellness initiative

Thursday, January 24th, 2013

Lisa Kruse, wellness coordinator, and Dan Schletty, wellness coach, at Riverwood Healthcare

George Family Foundation and Allina Health partnership to improve health

Riverwood Healthcare Center is among 13 health systems serving Minnesota and western Wisconsin communities that have been chosen to participate in a three-year program called the Healthy Communities Partnership. A $475,000 grant from the George Family Foundation and Allina Health, and administered by the George Family Foundation, will enable Riverwood to screen, assess and improve the health of local residents in the Aitkin County and Garrison area communities it serves.

“This program recognizes that at least 40 percent of deaths in the United States are attributed to four behaviors: unhealthy eating, inadequate exercise, smoking and hazardous drinking,” said Courtney Baechler, MD, vice president of the Penny George Institute for Health and Healing, the part of Allina Health that is responsible for health promotion and wellness. “About 95 percent of the population lives with an identifiable risk factor.”

To implement a community-wide wellness initiative that will focus on obesity and healthy weight management, Riverwood has hired a full-time wellness coach, Dan Schletty, and a part-time wellness coordinator, Lisa Kruse. Dr. Jessica Hodson, family physician at Riverwood, will act as physician adviser and help promote and oversee the wellness initiative.

Schletty, who has seven years of experience with health coaching and personal training, will offer one-to-one coaching to help participants in health screenings develop personalized health improvement plans. With 13 years of experience working as the community education director for the McGregor school district, Kruse is very familiar withAitkinCountyand has been instrumental in the development of health and fitness programs. She will coordinate community outreach for the wellness initiative and compile an inventory of local health and fitness resources that will be shared with the community.

“As our local population ages, getting people to take greater responsibility for their health is more important than ever,” said Michael Hagen, Riverwood CEO. “With health care costs consuming such a large share of government budgets and personal income, taking steps to embrace healthier behaviors is no longer optional; it’s a must do now. We are excited to join this partnership for wellness where we now have greater resources to engage local residents, businesses and organizations and our own staff in improving their health.”

Along with the other health systems in the partnership, Riverwood will customize programs to fit specific needs and resources of the communities it serves. Some standard components will include:

  • Hold baseline screenings to help participants learn their “health score” and what that means for overall health.
  • Participants will participate in a health screening and be rescreened each year over a period of three years.
  • Encourage use of an online tool called Family Health Manager, which will be available on Riverwood’s website.
  • Develop an inventory of local resources to identify and fill gaps in local wellness programming.
  • Work with each participant on a health improvement plan that combines medical and non-medical approaches.

“We need to move away from the ‘find it, fix it, and forget it’ model currently in wide use in the medical community,” said Penny George, co-founder of the George Family Foundation. “These partnerships are a step toward making integrative healthcare more mainstream, and we believe that is central to empowering individuals to take more responsibility for their own health.”

The 12 other health systems that have been selected and have had ongoing discussions with Allina Health about ways to improve health and wellness activities in their communities include First Light Health System, Mora, MN; Hutchinson Area Health Care, Hutchinson, MN; Ridgeview Medical Center, Waconia, MN; Baldwin Area Medical Center, Baldwin, WI; District One Hospital, Faribault, MN; Buffalo Hospital, Buffalo MN; Cambridge Medical Center, Cambridge, MN; River Falls Area Hospital, River Falls, WI; Cuyuna Regional Medical Center, Crosby; Grand Itasca Clinic& Hospital; Regina Medical Center, Hastings; Rice Memorial Hospital, Willmar.

These partnerships are a new direction for Allina Health, formerly Allina Hospitals & Clinics. With this and similar initiatives, such as the Neighborhood Health Connection and Heart of New Ulm, the health system is moving beyond hospitals and clinics and into communities. By using consistent screening methods and measurable electronic data, Allina Health researchers are hoping to identify successful health improvement catalysts.

Allina Health is dedicated to the prevention and treatment of illness and enhancing the greater health of individuals, families and communities throughout Minnesotaand western Wisconsin. The George Family Foundation is a private grantmaking organization with an emphasis on leveraged, strategic funding. The Foundation funds innovative ideas in integrative health, education, leadership development, social justice and spirituality in everyday life. Steps to avoid spread of flu virus

Monday, January 14th, 2013

Riverwood Healthcare Center is not yet seeing an unusually high rate of influenza cases like some communities in the southern part of Minnesota at this time, but the organization is urging some precautionary steps.

From Dec. 31 through Jan. 8, Riverwood has confirmed 30 cases of influenza among those treated for flu-like symptoms in the hospital and its emergency department, urgent care clinic and Aitkin clinic. During the same period, there were three cases of influenza among patients treated for flu-like symptoms at the Riverwood Garrison clinic and zero among patients treated at the McGregor clinic. Five of these influenza patients were hospitalized.

“We are not restricting hospital visitors yet, however, we are urging anyone with flu-like symptoms of a fever, cough, sore throat or with a sick family member NOT to visit Riverwood hospital patients,” says Barb Fulton, clinic and outpatient services manager  at Riverwood. “Those who do visit hospital patients should thoroughly wash their hands before and after their visit to avoid the spread of germs. We will continue to closely monitor and evaluate whether hospital visitor restrictions need to be put in place as we move further into the flu season.”

There are other precautions Riverwood is taking at this point to help prevent the spread of the flu virus. To protect patient safety, all magazines and reading materials have been pulled for clinic and hospital lobbies for a temporary period during the flu season, which typically lasts through March. So consider bringing your own reading materials to clinic appointments as desired.

If you come to a medical clinic appointment with flu-like symptoms of coughing and sneezing or are accompanying a patient who has these symptoms:

  • Ask for a mask at Riverwood clinic or hospital reception desk and wear it until you leave the facility.
  • For hand hygiene, use the antibacterial hand cleaning solution that is available at the front desk areas as well.
  • Sit further away from others to avoid exposing them to the virus you may have. Cough droplets can spread in a 3-foot area around your body.
  • Cover your cough by coughing into your sleeve or a disposable tissue.

Flu vaccine is still available and can reduce your risk of getting influenza. To schedule a flu shot nurse appointment, call Riverwood clinic’s appointment line or toll-free at (888) 270-1882. Flu vaccine is also available from Aitkin County Health & Human Services. For a flu shot appointment, call (218) 927-7200. To see more information on influenza and steps to protect your health, go to www.co.aitkin.mn.us

Flu vaccine still available locally

Monday, January 7th, 2013

If you want to get a flu shot, it’s not too late to get one.

Riverwood Healthcare clinics in Aitkin, Garrison and McGregor are still offering nurse appointments for flu shots. If you already have a scheduled clinic appointment, just ask for the flu shot to be given at this time. To schedule a flu shot appointment, simply call your Riverwood clinic’s appointment line or toll-free at (888) 270-1882.

Flu vaccine is also available from Aitkin County Health & Human Services. For a flu shot appointment, call (218) 927-7200.

Influenza is a contagious upper respiratory infection with symptoms that may include a fever, headache, sore throat, a dry cough, body aches and extreme fatigue. A flu shot can greatly reduce your risk of getting this disease. It takes about 2-3 weeks for your body to start building antibodies for protection against the flu after you receive the vaccine.

“As you may have heard through the media, there is a high incidence of flu this season that is rapidly spreading in our local communities and nationwide,” says Linda Chantland, infection control nurse at Riverwood. “It’s very important to get vaccinated to reduce your risk for this disease, which can cause serious health complications, especially for children, women who are pregnant, those with chronic illnesses and the elderly.”

To protect yourself and to help reduce the spread of influenza, the Minnesota Department of Health recommends:

  • If you are sick, stay home from work or school. Remain home until 24 hours after your symptoms resolve without the aid of fever-reducing medications.
  • Cover your nose and mouth with your sleeve when you cough or sneeze.
  • Clean your hands frequently and thoroughly – with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand rub solution.
  • Clean your hands after shaking hands or having other close contact with other people – before eating or preparing food, or touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
  • Make sure to drink enough fluids while you’re sick.
  • If you develop possible flu symptoms and you want to consult your healthcare provider, call before going in for an office visit. You may not need to go in, depending on your symptoms.
  • People at risk for severe flu or flu complications should contact their health care provider if they have flu symptoms or have been closely exposed to people with flu symptoms.
