Second phase of clinic/hospital lobby renovations to begin

Monday, February 4th, 2013

The first phase of renovations for the main lobby of Riverwood Healthcare Center in Aitkin, which have been under way since October, will reach completion in mid-February.  On Feb. 19, five new check-in stations for both clinic appointments and hospital admissions will open to the left of the front desk reception area. With partial walls separating the stations, the new check-in area will offer greater privacy and convenience for patients.

In mid-February, the second phase of construction work to replace flooring and wall coverings for the lobby waiting areas will begin.  Signs will direct patients and visitors to areas that are temporarily closed to foot traffic.

From Feb. 18 through March 1, there will be no lobby access to the emergency room, and patients will be escorted to an alternate entrance in the hospital’s main corridor. For a two-week period from the first week in March to March 15, the main entrance and entry area will be closed from 5 p.m. until 5 a.m.  Signs will direct patients and visitors to an alternate entrance and exit during this evening and overnight period. Staff escorts will be on hand to guide patients and visitors as needed.

“We have planned this next phase of lobby construction work so that there is minimal disruption for patients and visitors during day-time hours,” says Michael Hagen, Riverwood CEO.  “We appreciate the patience and understanding of all during these months of construction activity throughout our facility.”

Riverwood’s lobby renovations are expected to reach completion the third week in March. On March 25, diabetes education and nursing services for wound care, ostomy care, continence and foot care will open in new space within the hospital, just off the main lobby. The only Riverwood service that will remain in the Outpatient Services facility at 601 Bunker Hill Drive is the sleep study lab.

The last major renovation to enlarge the hospital’s cafeteria and dining room will get under way the second week in February and finish up in late April. Riverwood plans to host a grand re-opening of the hospital and clinic in late May.

Hospital main lobby renovation to start

Saturday, September 22nd, 2012

Beginning the week of Sept. 24-27, construction work will begin to renovate the main lobby area for Riverwood Healthcare Center in Aitkin as part of the hospital expansion project that has been under way since May 2011.

The area around the current front desk reception counter, admitting and clinic check-in stations will be enclosed with a temporary wall to for the construction work. The Auxiliary volunteers who greet patients and visitors will relocate to a table near the lobby for emergency care.  They will direct patients to the new areas within the Aitkin clinic lobby for both hospital admitting and clinic check-in.

The office for Riverwood’s financial counselor, Rae Reinhardt, who meets with patients on medical bill issues, will temporarily relocate to another area of the hospital. Front desk volunteers will offer directions or escort service as needed.

“As with other portions of our hospital expansion and renovations project, there will be minimal impact for our patients and visitors,” says Jayne Anderson, director of quality and risk. “In addition to a fresh new look that will enhance the healing environment of our hospital, the newly redesigned lobby will streamline patient traffic flow with five work stations staffed by employees who can handle either clinic or hospital check-in.”

Riverwood’s main lobby renovation is expected to take three months, October through December. Some finishing work for floor and ceiling coverings will continue in January. The entire hospital expansion project will reach completion in May 2013, at which time the public will be invited for tours.

Riverwood Foundation director retires

Monday, August 20th, 2012

John Slettom

John Slettom, executive director of Riverwood Foundation, in affiliation with Riverwood Healthcare Center, announced his retirement this week.

“I’ve been blessed to end my 40-year career in the nonprofit world at Riverwood, working with great colleagues and volunteers who are dedicated to a great mission of advancing health care services locally,” Slettom says. “For the past two years, I have dedicated much time and energy to the Better Together Capital Campaign to raise funds for the $21 million hospital expansion and renovations in Aitkin. It’s been an honor to work for an organization that is focused on the future of health care.”

Michael Hagen, Riverwood Healthcare chief executive officer, adds: “John took on a huge challenge to launch a major capital campaign to support our hospital expansion project in a very short window of time. A testament to his leadership is that the Better Together Capital Campaign has been very successful, with more than $1.6 million of the $2.2 million goal raised to date. We wish John all the best as he moves into retirement.”

Slettom will remain in the area on the Slettom family farm in Glen as a seasonal resident, spending winters with wife, Jeanyne, in Claremont, California, who will also retire in a few years. He looks forward to staying involved in the local community.

The position of director for Riverwood Foundation will be posted on the Riverwood website and in local newspapers in the weeks ahead. In the meantime, Jodie Johnson will continue as interim director for Riverwood Foundation.
